Family Adventure Trip in Crete
Crete, the largest and most mountainous of the Greek islands, is the cradle of Europe's earliest civilization and the land where ancient myth and modern reality blend seamlessly against a backdrop of outstanding natural beauty.
Our 8-day trip, explores the southwest coast of Crete, with its spectacular White Mountains, the deep gorges and coastal trails that lead us to charming fishing villages and quite beaches, accessible only by boat.
Starting from Chania with its picturesque Venetian port we will depart for the village of Agia Irini and enjoy a picnic lunch in its quite gorge before emerging at the crystal clear waters of Mediterranean Sea - ideal for snorkeling. Follow ancient paths to reach the second Roman city in Crete, visiting the temple of God Asklipios and exploring the ruins from Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine period.
Ascending well-maintained trails we will reach Kallergi's refuge for stunning views to Omalos plateau, the White Mountains and the Samaria gorge - Europe's largest gorge, that offers us one of the most rewarding walks through a spectacular botanic garden, the home of the wild goats (Kri-kri) and griffon vultures.
The white-blue washed houses of the charming village of Loutro will accommodate us for three days giving us the opportunity to participate in various outdoor activities like rock-climbing, sea canoeing, coastal walking or hiking through ancient rocky build trails to Anopolis -one of the most "authentic" Cretan villages and Aradena gorge with its pink oleanders.
8-DAY MULTIPLE ACTIVITY ITINERARY IN WEST CRETE
Highlights include: Samaria gorge (longest in Europe), Agia Irini and Aradena gorge, the ancient city Lissos (Ruins from Hellenistic, Roman Byzantine period), crystal-clear beaches to swim and picturesque fishing villages.
DAY 1: Meet at the airport of Chania and transfer to our hotel. In the evening we will have a brief presentation of the whole trip and will continue with a dinner at a traditional tavern in the picturesque Venetian port of Chania. (Overnight in Chania)
DAY 2 (3 hrs walk): After breakfast we depart for the village of Agia Irini in Chania area and we hike through Agia Irini gorge to Sougia. This gorge provides a nice and quiet path next to a stream. A picnic lunch will be offered while in the gorge. Sougia is a beautiful village on the southern coast of Crete where we will have the opportunity to enjoy a swim in the crystal-clear waters of Mediterranean Sea. (Overnight in Sougia)
DAY 3 (3 hrs walk): Starting from the small port of Sougia, we will cross the beautiful gorge of Selinou and following the European path E4 we reach the ancient city of Lissos, an important center of hydrotherapy in ancient years which flourished in the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine era. Here we visit a well-preserved temple with mosaic floor dedicated to the God of medicine Asklipios and we will have much to admire by making a small loop around the city.
We refresh ourselves in the cove and we explore the crystal clear waters and the bottom of the sea by snorkeling. (Overnight in Sougia)
DAY 4 (3 hrs walk): Our mini-bus brings us at Omalos plateau. Starting from the entrance of Samaria gorge we shall follow the path that leads up to the mountain refuge "Kallergi". The refuge lies opposite of Mt. Gingilos above Samaria gorge and provides spectacular views into the heart of the White Mountains, the Samaria gorge and Omalos plateau. We shall enjoy a mountain tea at the refuge and we return the same way back to Omalos where we need to be accurate in our calculations in order to discover some hidden targets through an orienteering game, by using the instructions and the compasses provided. We spend the night at a family owned hotel in Omalos plateau. (Overnight in Omalos)
DAY 5 (6 hrs walk): Today we shall walk in the famous Samaria gorge , the largest gorge in Europe and one of the most beautiful that nature can provide. This is where the wild goats of Crete (Kri-kri) live as well as some of the most rare and highly threatened with extinction wild birds of Europe, such as the griffon vulture and the lammergeier (Gypaetus barbatus). We walk on a good path in shady pine forest and beside a melodic stream. We reach the small village of Agia Roumeli , where we can relax and enjoy a swim before take the ferry to the charming village of Loutro. (Overnight in Loutro)
DAY 6: From Loutro we shall walk on the E4 path to Marmara beach. The sea caves and the green waters will offer us an enjoyable swim before participate in our most exhilarating activity - rock climbing that will take place on the half pitch rock at the exit of Aradena gorge. Using helmets, harnesses and ropes we will learn the safety techniques of this fun activity, which builds group spirit and self-confidence. (Overnight in Loutro)
DAY 7: Depending from the wind we will paddle our sea-canoes either in the small golf of Loutro or around Mouros cape to explore the coastline of the area of Phoinix. The parents that wish to hike can ascend the ancient path until Anopolis village, a historic area from where the revolution against the Turks began in 1866 and return back to Loutro through Aradena gorge making a loop. DAY 8: Embark at the ferry that will arrive at the village of Hora Sfakion where our mini bus will return us back to Chania. Our trips ends at Chania and depending on the departure time we are free to shop and relax. We transfer you to Chania's airport at convenient time.

Price Includes: All accommodations, all meals from dinner on Day 1 through breakfast on the last day, all picnic lunches, group transfers to and from airport, all transport throughout the trip, baggage transport, services of the tour leader - guide, entrance fees in Samaria National Park and Agia Irini gorge, personal accident insurance, all outdoor activities as mentioned in the program, VAT.
Not Included: Transport to and from Crete, alcoholic beverages and soft drinks, personal expenses, entrance fees in Museums and other sites of interest (i.e. monasteries, caves, etc).
Insurance: Everyone participating in any of Cretan Adventures events/activities is covered by personal insurance through CHARTIS GREECE. In case a participant is already covered by their insurance under better conditions for the chosen activities and is unwilling to be covered by CHARTIS GREECE, they must notify in paper the above to Cretan Adventures one day before the event (excluding weekends or holidays), the latest.
Cretan Adventures is not responsible for any accidents or mishaps directly or indirectly related to the tour.
Available Dates: Any date upon request from May to October 2011.
Transport: We travel by our own air-conditioned bus or taxis, which leaves us to walk and continues, with our baggage, to the next place where we will stay for the night.
Accommodation: Full Board at Hotel with private facilities. (The trip prices are based on double occupancy)
Food: Breakfast in the hotel and one meal per day. (Vegetarians are welcomed on the trips)
Activity Level: The hikes offer a moderate trek with a maximum of 6 hours walk (Samaria gorge) on rocky footpaths.
No previous experience is needed to any of our activities.
Equipment: Daypack (approx. 20-35lt), trekking shoes, sport shoes, water bottle, hat, sun cream, sun glasses, swimming suit, casual clothing.
Note on Itineraries: Please bear in mind that the itinerary can be altered for numerous reasons beyond our control (e.g. harsh weather, trail conditions) to ensure the safety and the well being of the group. The final adventure decision for the day's activity is left up to the trip leader.
