Today we shall go to the outskirts of Heraklion for a private tour of the famous, and somewhat controversial, Knossos Palace. Knossos is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete. It is considered to have been the ceremonial and political center of the Minoan civilization and culture. The site has been extensively “restored”, making it perhaps more understandable to visitors, though the restoration itself is very controversial. It was allegedly also the home of the legendary King Minos. The Palace is also associated with the myth of the Labyrinth with the Minotaur.
From Knossos we shall continue to Koronekes estate and traditional olive mill to learn how extra virgin olive oil is made, both the traditional method of First Cold Pressed and the modern method of Cold Extraction. We first talk about olive tree farming (organic and non-organic). Then we visit the olive mill where we explain every step of the production, from the tree to the milling methods (traditional and modern) and will taste 3 extra virgin olive oils, 1 flavored oil, olives, Cretan sweet vinegar and petimezi.
Please bear in mind that the itinerary can be altered for numerous reasons beyond our control (e.g., harsh weather, road conditions) to ensure the safety and the well being of the group. The final touring selection is left up to the trip leader.
